How to Apply for Salzamt Residencies
Residencies at the Salzamt are made available through several complementary programs and partnerships, offering artists different opportunities to live and work in Linz. Depending on the program, residencies are awarded through open applications, invitations, or collaborations with partner institutions and cities.
1) State of Upper Austria
The State of Upper Austria offers an apartment and studio at the Salzamt for one-month residencies, together with a grant. Applications are open until the end of July for residencies taking place the following year.
The program welcomes artists living in Upper Austria’s partner regions:
Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Georgia, Grand Est, Israel, Île-de-France, North Rhine-Westphalia, Odessa, Quebec, Saxony, São Paulo, Shandong, Schleswig-Holstein, Sichuan, South Bohemia, South Tyrol, Trentino, and Western Cape.

2) University of Art and Design Linz
The University of Art and Design Linz offers residency opportunities at the Salzamt, including an apartment, studio, and stipend. Artists are invited by the university and its professors and have the opportunity to become part of the university’s teaching and academic environment during their stay.

3) Ars Electronica Festival
As part of its annual program, the Ars Electronica Festival uses the Salzamt from July through September and awards residencies directly. These residencies connect artists with the festival’s international network and program.
4) UNESCO City of Media Arts
As a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Linz collaborates with a range of partner cities internationally. Through these connections, the Salzamt is particularly interested in welcoming visual artists from partner cities.
Residencies of one to two months can be offered, with opportunities for reciprocal exchanges that enable artists from Linz and partner cities to work and connect across the network.
5) Salzamt Open Call
In addition to our established partnerships and programs, the Salzamt offers residency opportunities directly to artists. Studios that are not needed for our own exhibition program or curatorial projects are made available for one- to two-month residencies.
These residencies include a €1,000 stipend for four weeks, as well as coverage of travel expenses, providing artists with dedicated time and space to develop their practice in Linz.
