Matteo Pizzolante – Artist in Residence

Matteo Pizzolante is a guest at the Atelierhaus Salzamt as part of a residency from early October to early December 2025. Before his arrival in Linz, we asked the artist from Italy a few questions about his work.
How do you work? Please select 2–3 characteristic works describe them briefly.
My artistic practice moves at the intersection of art, science, and technology. With a background in engineering and architecture, I use digital imagery as a tool to analyze and represent space. My installations—composed of sculptures, photographs, and videos—combine digital construction with material interventions that simulate time and memory.
Among my recent works, La linea che ci divide dal domani, presented at FuturDome, includes a cyanotype on plasterboard that reconstructs a childhood space, reflecting on memory as a process of layering and loss. The Patience of the Eye, previously exhibited at StadtGalerie Brixen, explores the memory of Hotel Aurora, a building once owned by my grandfather, through photographs, digital models, and sculptural interventions.
Do you have a particular project in mind that you would like to work on in Linz?
During the residency in Linz, I will focus on Dissection of a Snapshot, a project centered on the unsolved case of Lidia Macchi. The work investigates the narrative mechanisms of true crime and the visual construction of truth through cyanotypes, 3D reconstructions, and video, questioning how media narratives intrude into private lives with a voyeuristic and violent gaze.
As part of the residency, I plan to organize two public events: a conference and a practical workshop. The conference will explore the use of digital investigation techniques in forensic contexts, while the workshop will offer hands-on experience with photogrammetry as a tool for spatial analysis. These events are intended for artists, researchers, students, and professionals working in photography, architecture, scenography or anyone interested in the intersection of art, photography, and digital technologies. In my work, reconstruction is not aimed at achieving historical authenticity but rather at creating open spaces where memory can be questioned, manipulated, and shared. What interests me most is the tension between documentation and fiction, and how 3D software and digital reconstruction techniques can be used to shape narratives that remain subjective and permeable to interpretation.

Matteo Pizzolante ist von Anfang Oktober bis Anfang Dezember 2025 im Rahmen einer Residenz zu Gast im Atelierhaus Salzamt. Vor seiner Ankunft in Linz haben wir dem Künstler aus Italien einige Fragen zu seiner Arbeit gestellt.

Meine künstlerische Praxis bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle von Kunst, Wissenschaft und Technologie. Mit einem Hintergrund in Ingenieurwesen und Architektur nutze ich digitale Bildtechniken als Werkzeuge zur Analyse und Darstellung von Raum. Meine Installationen – bestehend aus Skulpturen, Fotografien und Videos – verbinden digitale Konstruktion mit materiellen Eingriffen, die Zeit und Erinnerung simulieren.
Zu meinen jüngsten Arbeiten zählen La linea che ci divide dal domani, gezeigt bei FuturDome, das eine Cyanotypie auf Gipskarton beinhaltet und einen Kindheitsort rekonstruiert – eine Reflexion über Erinnerung als Prozess von Schichtung und Verlust. The Patience of the Eye, bereits in der StadtGalerie Brixen ausgestellt, untersucht die Erinnerung an das Hotel Aurora, ein Gebäude, das einst meinem Großvater gehörte, durch Fotografien, digitale Modelle und skulpturale Eingriffe.
