Only the worst weather phenomena are given names. And only if they cause enough destruction, do they keep their names forever. The World Meteorological Organisation’s list of hurricane names rotates every six years. Atlantic tropical storms list for 2025 will start with Andrea and go all the way through to Wendy.
Hurricanes, blizzards, tornadoes, floods, and even entire, particularly severe, seasons have historically been given names based on where they hit – Great Galveston Hurricane (1900), or who suffered and what damage was caused –Schoolchildren’s Blizzard (1888). It might be the name of a sunken ship – Mataafa Storm (1905), or a flooded town – Johnstown Flood (1889). Sometimes the names are poetic, such as The Winter of Blue Snow (1886-87), or metaphorical, like the Dust Bowl, for the extended period of sand and dust storms on the American prairies in the 1930s.
Extreme meteorological events have one thing in common – they are nameless until they appear and innocent until they encounter something solid and material, an obstacle. That’s the moment we designate them. When the wind encounters something immaterial, hypothetical, or ephemeral something else occurs.
Speaking of dust and sand, what would you call a desert storm that can move borders? Watch the Kairos Channel and find out what…
